For this week’s discussion topic, we were to find a review of Oracle and to discuss its merits.
This is the review I’ve decided to use: https://www.trustradius.com/reviews/oracle-database-12c-2019-12-13-17-38-58
For some background, Oracle is required for this class. I’ve also used other SQL databases like MySQL and MariaDB, and NoSQL options like Redis.
From my limited experience with Oracle Database, I agree with many of the points that the reviewer brought up. SQL Developer has been a frustrating experience. I’ve found MySQL Workbench to be a much better product in terms of stability and ease of use. I haven’t used Flashback, had to deal with costs, or had to call Oracle support before, but past experience with other Oracle products have not made me particularly willing to give Oracle the benefit of the doubt; OCI has been the worst IaaS service I’ve tried, and I despise having to manage dependencies in Java.
